Common Water Heater Emergencies We Handle on Long Island

The list below covers about 95% of emergency calls we take from Long Island homeowners. If your situation looks like one of these, call now.

  • No hot water at all. Could be pilot, thermocouple, gas valve, element, or thermostat. We diagnose, then decide repair vs replace.
  • Leaking from the bottom of the tank. Tank has rusted through. There is no repair. We replace, often the same day.
  • Burst water heater / flooding. Shut the cold water supply valve at the top. Shut off the gas or power to the unit. Call us. We'll dispatch fast.
  • Pilot light won't stay lit. Most common emergency call. Usually a failing thermocouple. Often a same-day fix on the spot.
  • Loud rumbling, popping, or banging. Hard-water sediment crust at the tank bottom. Indicator of either a flush-and-keep or an early replacement, depending on age.
  • Rusty or brown hot water. Interior of the tank is corroding. The unit is on its way out.
  • T&P valve dripping or spraying. Safety relief is doing its job. Often signals over-pressure or temperature issue that needs to be fixed before something bigger goes wrong.
  • Tankless error codes. We service Navien and Rinnai units, including descale-related failures and ignition errors.

How Emergency Water Heater Repair Works on Long Island

Emergency water heater repair calls are our most time-sensitive work. The call usually starts the same way: no hot water, a wet basement floor, or a rumble that sounds like a freight train coming through the wall. Whatever the symptom, our techs are dispatched the same day across Nassau and Suffolk County. Diagnostic is the first step — we figure out what failed before recommending repair or replacement, and we tell you honestly which path makes sense.

Some emergency water heater calls are quick fixes (a thermocouple, a thermostat, an element), and the tech has the parts on the truck. Others are end-of-life situations where the tank itself has failed and the only real option is replacement. Because we stock the common tank sizes on the truck, we can move from emergency diagnostic to fully installed new unit in a single visit on most calls. Permits are pulled even on rush replacements; we never skip that step.

Before We Arrive

What to Do Before the Emergency Water Heater Tech Arrives

A few quick steps that can save your basement and shorten the repair.

1

Shut the Cold Supply

There's a valve on the cold water line at the top of the tank. Turn it clockwise to stop water from continuing to fill a leaking tank.

2

Cut the Power or Gas

Electric: flip the breaker. Gas: turn the dial on top of the unit to "OFF" or "Pilot". Do not relight if you smell gas.

3

Move Anything Valuable

If water is on the floor, get boxes, electronics, and rugs out of the way. The leak slows once you cut supply, but standing water will keep spreading.

4

Call Us

Tell us age of unit, what you see (puddle / no heat / rust water / noise), and your address. We dispatch immediately.

Repair or Replace?

Emergency Water Heater Repair or Replace?

Plenty of emergencies are fixable. Plenty are not. We diagnose first and tell you straight.

Usually Repair

Failed thermocouple, dead heating element, faulty thermostat, T&P valve, anode rod replacement. Unit is under 8 years old.

Usually Replace

Tank leaking from the body. Unit over 10 years old. Repair cost exceeds 50% of a new install. Repeat failures in the last 24 months.

Want the Framework?

Our Repair vs Replace guide walks through age, repair cost, and the 50% rule in detail.

Permits and code on emergency replacements: even on a rush replacement, we pull the permit with your town and meet Nassau or Suffolk plumbing code. We will not skip permitting to save 30 minutes on an emergency call. It protects you on insurance and at resale.
